Hold Limits

Evergreen v.2.2

Evergreen Holds Policy is set so that patrons are allowed ten holds. The limit of ten holds per borrower is set for a number of reasons, including:

  • Prevent "hold no-shows"
  • Manage circulation of High Demand titles
  • Manage delivery load

Manage "wish list" type book lists

If patrons are interested in more than 10 items, they can use the OPAC Lists to keep a list of titles that they wish to place on hold in the future. Bookbags allow patron to track an unlimited number of items.

Staff exception to the 10 item hold limit

Staff has the discretion to allow an individual patron to have up to 20 holds at any one time. Exceeding the hold limit should only be done when there is a compelling reason to exceed the limit, such as:

  • Items needed by a teacher for a class project for a limited time (in general, school librarians or teachers should use the interlibrary loan resources provided by the school library system and BOCES if their local school libraries are insufficient at meeting classroom needs)
  • Items needed by a homeschooler on an occasional basis
  • Items needed by a book club on an occasional basis
    • *Preferred method* is to have the members of the book club place their own holds as this more accurately reflects who is using the library
  • Individual preparing a program or workshop for the library or another organization
ALERT! The hold limit should NOT be exceeded on a regular basis, "just because", or for staff personal use.

Good OWWL etiquette is appreciated!

Exceed Hold Limit

  1. Use the Staff Client logged in as LIBCIRC or LIBTECH
  2. Retrieve the patron record and Place holds as usual
  3. There is NO override code or "force action" alert for holds 11-20
  4. Staff may place up to 20 holds on behalf of the patron
ALERT! Patrons will NOT be able to place any holds using the OPAC once their 10-hold limit has been exceeded.
